On November 5, 2017, a gunman used a semi-automatic rifle to kill 26 people and wound 20 others in a small, rural Baptist Church. Based upon the ensuing investigation, this case presents a confluence of hot topic issues in criminal justice–domestic violence, guns, veterans, substance abuse, and mental health. When multiple systems fail, is this a renewed call for justice reform? Given the overlap between mental illness and so many other criminogenic risk factors, how can mental health courts be a path to solutions?

Summit Objective:
To educate mental health court personnel and the larger population on emerging best practices in establishing, maintaining, and evaluating a mental health court system.

Goals:

• Organize/conduct a bi-annual conference with national reach
• Recruit foremost experts to participate in sharing research, findings, best practices
• Encourage collaboration between courts, stakeholders, and overlapping jurisdictions nationwide
